January is National Walk Your Dog Month AND National Train Your Dog Month! It surprisingly makes a lot of sense to have the two in the same month because walking a dog can either be very calm and relaxing or a constant battle trying to control your pup on leash. January is a great time to change things up and make going for a walk enjoyable for the two of you!

Before starting your walk, be sure to pack enough poop bags, treats to reward your ‘good girl’, water, and the proper leash and collar. There are a variety of leashes on the market that you can choose from. By using the proper leashes as training tools, you’ll be able to keep her under control. You can visit our previous blog on a break-down of a few of our favorites.

Use this time while teaching your pup to walk loosely on a leash to bond with her. Focus on rewarding her when she’s walking by your side and paying attention to you. If you need help with the basics of teaching your pup ‘heel’, ask either of our Lodge & Learn trainers for advice.

Taking my pups for a walk is my favorite way to provide canine enrichment. They’re exposed to new smells, different textures to walk on, all while physically exercising their bodies. By taking them on different paths, you’ll make their walk a fun new experience every time!

Until next week…Well Wishes and Puppy Kisses!

Baelyn
