Of course you want to take him with you! Why shouldn’t your furry member of the family be allowed to join you and the family on your Holiday vacation? What’s stopping you? There are a few common obstacles when it comes to holiday pet transportation.
1: The Logistics:
No matter how much joy it would bring the kids, some dogs just don’t do well in cars. Transporting your dog in a carrier is fine if it’s the right size, but on long car rides you might want to consider other options. Some dogs, just like humans get motion sickness, and it’s even more common in younger dogs who haven’t fully developed structures for balance.
Pet MD says, “Stress can also add to travel sickness, so if your dog has only ever ridden in the car to go to the vet, he may literally worry himself sick on the road.” A road trip may or may or may not be a good idea depending on your dog’s personality, and age.
2: Sleeping Arrangements
Once you get to where you’re going, is it dog friendly? Not all hotel chains allow pets, and if your shacking up with family their may not always be room. Many hotel chains do allow pet however. Here is a list of the most well known, pet-friendly hotels and their policies. The best case scenario is staying with dog friendly relatives if they have dog’s of their own and both your dog and their dogs play well with each other. Though some other issues might be; relatives with allergies, dogs who don’t get along with children, and puppies that aren’t potty trained.
3: Expenses
Traveling over the Holidays can be expensive. Hotels are booked, flights are full and rates are soaring. Throw in travel arrangements for your pet and you’ve got one expensive holiday. But, it can also be expensive to leave them behind. Deciding on whether to leave your pal behind with a friend or babysitter can be mentally taxing, and time consuming. Planning and preparations alone require time and sufficient notice, especially if your going on a long holiday trip (a week or more).
