November is almost here! In the human world, we recognize November as “Movember,” a special month dedicated to raising awareness and funding for men’s health. But did you know that November is also Canine Prostate Awareness Month? The astounding success of the Movember campaign for men’s health inspired us to explore ways in which we could help ignite the conversation about canine health.

Why Canine Prostate Health?

Some sort of prostate disease is likely to affect nearly 80% of unneutered male dogs after they reach five years of age. Symptoms of prostate disease may include difficulty urinating, prostate enlargement, constipation, and bloody stool. In rare cases, dogs with these symptoms may have some sort of prostate cancer. Often, a dog with prostate disease is forced to suffer in silence. If you have noticed these symptoms in your adult male dog, or he shows any sign of discomfort when using the bathroom, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Health Concerns for Female Dogs

Male dogs aren’t the only ones who may suffer in silence. Unspayed adult female dogs are also susceptible to a variety of health complications including ovarian tumors and breast cancer. In fact, an unspayed adult female dog has a 26% chance of developing a mammary tumor. This is nearly three times the likelihood of a woman developing a breast tumor.

Spay or Neuter Your Dog for a Healthy Life

The best way to ensure that your dog never suffers in silence is to have them spayed or neutered. Spaying or neutering your dog greatly reduces their risk of developing certain types of diseases and cancers including prostate disease, testicular cancer, venereal disease, ovarian tumors, and breast cancer.

How Can You Make a Difference?

Our goal is to get loud in November. We are teaming up with SpaySa to help promote canine health and prostate awareness! All month long we will be dedicating our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pawsatx) to the cause. You can help spread the word by entering our Mustache-A-Dog photo contest. All you have to do is snap a picture of your dog wearing a mustache and share it on our page. If you do so, you will be eligible to win a special prize from us. Be on the look out for more details soon. You can also help spread the word by using the hashtag #MustacheADog on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Together we can help spread the word about canine health and the importance of spaying and neutering your dog!
