Sam is the newest groomer in our SPAwderosa department. She has over two years of professional experience and is a state certified groomer through Animal Behavior College. I like to think of Sam as our personal grooming guru! She is extremely passionate about making every dog look their best. So much so that she donates her grooming experience to the local animal shelters and makes adoptable pups look amazing for potential adopters. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her earlier this week to go over her must-know grooming tips and I’m so excited to share them with you!

Now, taking your dog’s coat and breed into consideration, here is her general grooming care advice, tips, and tricks on how to keep your pup healthy and her coat looking it’s best.

Daily Grooming Tips:
* Check your dog’s eyes and ears for any discharge or buildup. This will help you combat the beginning of an infection. If you see redness, discharge, buildup, or if the ears have a yeasty smell and your dog is constantly shaking her head, take your dog to the vet as soon as you can for a possible ear infection.

*Check in-between your dog’s paw pads daily. Look for signs of dry or cracked paws as well as burrs that get caught in longer hair breeds. Investing in a tin of all natural “Pawderosa Paw and Snoot Balm” will condition and naturally protect your dog’s paws.

*If you have a naturally wrinkly breed such as the pug and bulldog, this one’s for you! To avoid a yeast infection between those squishy wrinkles, wiping them out with baby wipes is the easiest way to go. You’ll also want to make sure that your dog’s wrinkles are not getting too dry or they’ll end up cracking. “Pawderosa Paw and Snoot Balm” can come to the rescue again!

*For freshening up stinky breath, you should strive to brush your dog’s teeth daily. At the very least, brushing them weekly will also help your dog combat against dental disease. You can also add “Fresh Breath Plaque Remover Pet Water Additive” to her water bowl. It’s made with natural ingredients and helps fight against plaque and tartar.

*Comb through your dog’s coat for a flea/ tick check. You can stop a full-blown flea infestation if you catch them quick enough. If you see fleas, bring in your pup to Pawderosa Ranch, where we offer a medicated flea bath and a pill that, within 30 minutes, kills adult fleas. If you live is a tick-prone area, Pawderosa Ranch sells a cool and effective device that makes tick removal easy and pain free.

As Needed Grooming Tips:
*Depending on your dog, bathing her about once a month or as needed is ideal. Keep in mind that bathing your dog too often could result in dry/ itchy skin. If you have a dog breed that has a long, thick, or curly coat, it’s best to schedule a bath with a groomer. Your groomer will make sure not to matt her coat during the bathing and drying process.

*Pawdicures aka nail trims! Most dogs need their nails trimmed about once a month, some dogs need them more or less frequent than others. If you hear your dog tap dancing on the tile or visually see her nails starting to curl, it’s time to trim!

*Grooming can be either a wonderful or stressful experience for your pup depending on how familiar she is with the process. Regardless of your dog’s age, get a start on socializing her to the basic grooming procedures outlined above and soon she will look forward to her Spa day!

I hope Sam can sit down with me again soon so we can put together another blog with information on how to socialize your dog to grooming! She was full of grooming tips and tricks, and I really appreciate her taking the time to share her knowledge with me for this week’s blog. Sam works at both the Airport and Schertz locations and she would love to answer any questions you may have about grooming. Feel free to stop by anytime and say Hello!
