Dogs are simple and interesting creatures. They need love and attention, just like humans do. They like to walk, play, eat and enjoy your company. Some have jobs, and some are here to grace us with their presence. We love our dogs, but how much do we really know about our four-legged friends? Here are some fun facts you may not know about.

Fact #1: Dogs can sniff out medical problems

Depending on the breed, a dog’s sense of smell is between 10,000 and 100,00 times better than an average human. This means that trained dogs can sniff out medical conditions. Dogs who are trained to sniff out medical problems can help diagnose particular conditions or alert their owners when they need medication. There are some dogs even trained to sniff out Covid-19.

Fact #2: Some dogs can beat a cheetah at a race

You read that correctly! The fastest breed of dog is the Greyhound. These hounds can run up to 45 miles per hour. Even though a cheetah can get up to 70 miles per hour, they can only keep up that speed for about 30 seconds. Greyhounds can easily run at their top speed for up to 7 miles! Even though the cheetah may have a fast start, the Greyhound would take the win easily.

Fact #3: Dogs can be left or right-pawed

Just like humans, dogs have a preferred paw that they lead with. You can actually find out if your furry friend is left or right-pawed right at home! Give them a toy or interactive game and see which paw they use first to help them.

Fact #4: Dogs are about as intelligent as a 2-year-old

Studies show dogs have the ability to learn over 100 words and gestures. That is about the same understanding as an average 2-year-old child! However, dogs are a little bit easier to train than a toddler, which is why they are used in multiple areas of assistance. To start training your pup the basics, bring them over to the ranch and we’ll help them get their basics out of the way!

Fact #5: Your yawn is contagious to dogs

Your furry friend is no match for a contagious yawn. Research shows that a human yawn can trigger a yawn from your pup. It’s also four times as likely to happen when it’s the yawn of the person they know.

BONUS Fun Fact!

Your dog is 100% happier when they get to interact with other dogs throughout the day. Bring them to The Ranch and we’ll make sure your pup is getting all of his pent-up energy out into a safe and fun environment.
