Assuming your pup is up to date on their vaccinations, let’s go over what you need to know before visiting the dog park!
Before going to the dog park, you’ll want to pack your pup a water bottle. It’s better to be safe and pack water for them because, unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for the dog park’s water fountain to not be functioning. Apply paw balm to their paws and pack a few poop bags, just in case the dog park ran out. Remember, don’t pack their favorite toys from home and no treats for your dog park visit since there could be pups with allergies and pups that may not like to share treats.
It’s important to pick the right dog park for your pup. If they get hot easily, you want to find a dog park with lots of shade trees or if they need more space to romp, a larger dog park would be a better choice for your pup. If you haven’t checked out our “San Antonio Dog Park Review”, head over to last week’s blog for our rating on a few of the more popular dog parks.
Once you’ve decided on a dog park you want to visit, examine the group of dogs before entering the dog park. You would never want to enter an off-leash dog park if your pup is not going to vibe well with the group of pups already there. For example, if your pup gets overwhelmed when a group of dogs greets him, you’ll want to either wait to enter the dog park until the dogs walk away from the door or encourage your pup to follow you as you walk around the dog park, so the group of pups doesn’t crowd yours!
Dog parks are full of enrichment and we’re so happy that San Antonio is full of them for you to choose from! If you’re unsure on how your pup will interact with other pups at the dog park, you can bring them to Pawderosa Ranch for doggie daycare. We will evaluate your pup in a group setting and give you a detailed report on their behavior.
Until next week…Well Wishes and Puppy Kisses!
XOXO,
Baelyn
